MDA Requests Contractors to Submit Sea-Based Missile Interceptor Concepts

The Missile Defense Agency has requested companies to submit concepts for a “Sea-Based Terminal Future Interceptor” that counters hypersonic missile threats.

The agency is asking industry players for technologies for a layered defense based on a multi-mission terminal-phase interceptor that functions with midcourse weapons to combat future hypersonic attacks.

Interested organizations are required to provide descriptions of weapon systems, component maturity, missile defense integration approaches, estimated achievable performance and risk-reduction technologies.

Interested parties are also expected to give details of interceptor concept design, including counter-missile munitions hardware configuration, kinematic performance, rocket motor staging, inter-pulse delays, firing doctrine, fire-control methodology, guidance phases, homing sensor operation and communications.

In addition, potential contractors need to explain the information on critical component technology maturity levels, a defended area performance assessment, weapon system concept support and terminal homing performance via multi-mode seeker.

The concerned parties should likewise describe concepts such as missile sizing to accommodate several packs in the Navy’s shipboard Mk 41 Vertical Launch System, flexible warhead design with submunition concepts, use of certified components, missile-to-missile communications ability, structural designs that accommodate maneuverability and key Aegis Weapon System integration requirements.

MDA may release a formal request for proposals based on responses by May 13, 2021, and may award multiple contracts valued at $5M each.
