Lawmaker Proposes Quantum Computing Center of Excellence for the Army

Rep. Nancy Mace, R-S.C., is proposing the establishment of a Quantum Computing Center of Excellence for the Army, as confirmed by an official from her office.

The center would be the first of its kind and is aimed at strengthening the U.S. military capabilities in the emerging field of quantum computing, DefenseScoop reported.

According to her office, Mace aims to amend the Department of Defense fiscal 2025 appropriations bill, seeking an additional $20 million for the Army’s research, development, test and evaluation account to support the new Center of Excellence.

The proposal comes as U.S. national security agencies, with Congressional support, have increasingly prioritized funding and activities in quantum technology to prepare for its future applications.

Mace’s effort builds on previous efforts by the House Armed Services Subcommittee on Cyber, Innovative Technologies and Information Systems to establish a similar center through the fiscal 2025 Service Member Quality of Life Improvement and National Defense Authorization Act.

The lawmaker plans to introduce the proposal when the House session resumes next week, a senior official from Mace’s office said.
