NNSA Extends Fluor’s Naval Nuclear Propulsion Contract

The Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration has exercised a five-year option period in a contract awarded to Fluor Marine Propulsion to support the Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program. 

With the extension, the Fluor-owned special purpose entity will continue managing and operating the Naval Nuclear Laboratory’s primary sites in New York, Pennsylvania and Idaho through 2028. The NNL facilities have developed advanced naval nuclear propulsion technology, provided technical support and trained nuclear operators to ensure the U.S. submarine and aircraft carrier fleets are safe and reliable, Fluor said.

The Naval Sea Systems Command and the NNSA each awarded a Naval Nuclear Propulsion contract to Fluor in a joint DOE and Department of the Navy competition in 2018. Fluor previously said the two contracts have a potential value of $30 billion if all options are exercised.

In 2021, the Department of the Navy extended its contract with the company for one year. The extension was valued at $1.16 billion.
