Pentagon’s Jason Weiss Named Chief Software Officer

The Department of Defense has appointed Jason Weiss as chief software officer, a role that will oversee the adoption of modern software development practices and application modernization. Weiss most recently served as the director of software modernization at the DOD.

Weiss’ appointment comes as the Pentagon moves forward with its Joint All-Domain Command and Control concept. It also comes at the back of a series of executive movements across the military. In September, U.S. Air Force Chief Software Officer Nic Chaillan announced his resignation, FedScoop reported.

The new chief software officer has 20 years of experience with the private industry, having served as vice president of information technology transformation at BAE Systems before joining the Pentagon. He started his career with the U.S. Navy as a cryptologic technician for the Naval Security Group Activity.

As a BAE VP, Weiss worked on data strategies, digital business optimization and digital transformation. He also oversaw efforts to provide DevSecOps reference architectures to the Defense Department, according to his LinkedIn profile.

Weiss has a master’s degree in intelligence from the American Public University System and a bachelor’s degree in computer science from University of Management and Technology.
