Garrett Berntsen

Garrett Berntsen was recently named the Deputy Chief Data Officer Center for Analytics at the U.S. Department of State where he is responsible for enhancing data governance and developing solutions for democratizing access to the Department’s data and analytics assets. Prior to his government service, he was instrumental in establishing the Center for Analytics (CfA), an enterprise analytics capability providing critical data science and data management support to help tackle the Department’s most challenging mission and management challenges. Mr. Berntsen has also provided analytics and strategy consulting support to the U.S. Department of Defense, U.S. Department of Transportation, and to the Inter-American Development Bank.
A former U.S. Army transportation officer of five years, Mr. Berntsen served two tours of duty in Afghanistan. He is a graduate of the U.S. Army Ranger School and the recipient of two bronze stars.
Mr. Berntsen earned a Master’s in International Economics with honors from the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies and received his Bachelors of Arts in Foreign Affairs from the University of Virginia.
