USTRANSCOM to Move Applications to Air Force’s Cloud One Platform

The U.S. Transportation Command plans to move its cloud applications to the U.S. Air Force‘s Cloud One platform in fiscal year 2023.

Senior USTRANSCOM information technology acquisition officials said during a virtual industry day that they met with the Cloud One team to discuss pilot programs to migrate the command’s transportation modeling and simulation tools and the unclassified and classified versions of its Global Transportation Planning systems to the cloud. The organization originally planned to move its offerings to the Joint Enterprise Defense Infrastructure on Amazon Web Service’s GovCloud, but it had to look for a new option when JEDI was canceled, FedScoop reported Wednesday.

When JEDI fell apart due to numerous protests, USTRANSCOM looked at other options on where to move its platforms. Two of the options were the Defense Enterprise Office Solution, which the command was already using for collaboration tools, and the Defense Information Systems Agency’s milCloud 2.0, which is expected to be terminated in 2022.

Scott Borchers, chief of the DevOps & Pipeline Division at USTRANSCOM, said Cloud One was chosen because of its infrastructure-as-a-service offering. He added that Cloud One will give the command the ability to deliver capability at a rapid pace.

Jim Lovell, a program executive officer for cloud migration at USTRANSCOM, said the command will likely finish its first three cloud transition pilots within fiscal 2022. He added that the command is likely to finalize contract actions for cloud transitions within the next 30 to 45 days.
